Since I did the headgasket in the Benz a few days ago, I've probably put about 500 miles on the engine. so far, everything looks good, but since the first startup I've had a constant nagging injector nail. My initial suspicion was that the new gasket could be thinner and raised the compression slightly. If the pop pressure in the injector was too low, then there could be fuel being injected prematurely. Furthermore, when I replaced the nozzles, I forewent pop testing and balancing the injectors and just installed the nozzles. I think I need to bite the bullet now and just get it done.
With that in mind today, I decided to call around and see if anyone knew of a diesel injection shop that could do the job. Previous, and admittedly less vigorous searches turned up a few diesel boat mechanics that wouldn't work on car injectors. Alas, after being transferred through four independent shops, scribbling their numbers in the dirt with a dry sharpie I finally found what I was looking for. The shop specializes in trucks, but the fuel guy on the phone said they could do it no problem. They're also not that far away. Excellent. I'm currently waiting for my new injector heat shields to arrive and then it's off to the shop. Hopefully I'll know in the next week if the pop testing was worth it.
Work on back-posting a few of the past major projects you've worked on, like the WRC subi. Don't limit yourself to the work exclusively but include commentary on why you love a particular car and the moments made it special--it takes a certain kind of person to pour their heart and soul into a diesel Benz cranking out 80 hp with 240k on the broken odometer. You really could make this a blog about any car you have/are/will work on at some point, and it'd be a great way of reminiscing. Be sure to include many photos, and I expect a healthy dose of frustrated ranting to add a distinctively "yup, that's Aidan" flair.
